Video Games Make You Eat More: Study

A Canadian-led study has offered up a new clue to the country’s obesity epidemic, suggesting that video-game use is not just a rampant and sedentary replacement for physical exertion, but actually compels players to eat more — even when they are not hungry.

Such electronic diversions are a pet peeve of health advocates, who often cite the fact they keep young people and adults from more vigorous activity that burns calories and curbs weight gain. The new research concludes that the games add calories to the equation, too.

The teenage subjects of the Canadian-Danish study — published last week in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition — spent an hour simply sitting in a comfortable chair and, on another occasion, an hour playing a video game.

After the gaming, they consumed an average of 80 calories more at a pasta lunch. The increase is more significant than it may sound, given that eating only 50 additional calories a day — an apple, for instance — will pack on 28 extra kilograms (62 pounds) over 10 years, said Dr. Jean-Philippe Chaput, the lead author.

“It’s a worse story than just being a sedentary activity,” said Dr. Chaput, a kinesiologist at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario research institute. “When we play video games, yes, we burn few calories, but we also eat more.”

Surveys filled out by the 22 young men who participated in the study showed the gamers consumed an average of 163 more calories through the day. Blood tests for appetite-related hormone levels showed no evidence that game playing had actually made them hungrier, however.

The researchers theorize that the normal mental strain of playing the devices calls out for some kind of edible “reward,” with comfort foods high in sugar and fat particularly effective at satisfying the impulse. Dr. Chaput said he suspects the impact is much greater than 80 calories, since in a real-life setting gamers often play with others and eat while they play — both factors that would encourage food intake.

The study underlines a key, widely misunderstood reality about weight gain, said Dr. Arya Sharma, chair of obesity research at the University of Alberta. Exercise is healthy for many reasons, but it will do little to reduce extra pounds; limiting food intake, on the other hand, is crucial to slimming down, he said, and sedentary activities like playing video games, watching TV and even working at a computer make us eat more.

“There is this widespread misconception that obesity results largely from people being physically inactive, not burning calories,” said Dr. Sharma. “Canadians are not getting fat because they’re lazy. They’re getting fat because they don’t have time and because they’re stressed out, they’re working too much ... they never shut off.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Chaput said he next wants to look at a new generation of games, such as the Nintendo Wii, that actually require physical exertion that mimics the characters on screen, to see whether they trigger the same over-eating effect. If so, it could be that any benefit of those games — advocated increasingly as a health-boosting pastime for senior citizens and others — could be offset by the resulting compulsion to eat, he said.

About 17% of Canadian children are overweight and 9% obese, according to Statistics Canada, rates that have climbed by as much as 30% in the past 20 years. Children spend more than eight waking hours on sedentary activity on average, four times the recommended amount.

It was supposed to be the "ballot box question," according the Liberal game plan: Do Canadians trust Stephen Harper — a prime minister slapped with a historic "contempt" label just days before the election was called — to govern the country in the true spirit of democracy, with honesty, transparency, accountability?

Nearly one month later, and just days away from a vote that appears increasingly likely to give Harper's Conservative party a landmark majority government, the Liberal strategy of trying to demonize Harper as a closet dictator pursuing "absolute power" is evidently in tatters.

Furthermore, much of the Liberal assault on Harper over trust and transparency has rebounded on the party's own leader, Michael Ignatieff, whose awkward handling of the "coalition" question, his failure to overcome Tory-stoked suspicions about his commitment to Canada and his dismally low ratings on leadership indexes have left the Liberals in genuine danger of losing their status as the official Opposition.

Ignatieff himself sized up the situation — succinctly and unwittingly — in his memorable "Rise Up" speech last weekend in Sudbury. Clearly crafted to win praise as an oratorical tour-de-force, the Bruce Springsteen-inspired address began with the line: "We're in a funny place in this election campaign." Ignatieff then offered a litany of alleged Conservative abuses of democracy and purported acts of corruption — shutting down Parliament, hiring a convicted fraudster, scrapping the long-form census — interspersed with lines such as: "Canadians kind of shrugged," "People say, so what?" and "It's all just political games — who cares?"

Try as he might to weave a compelling narrative aimed at inciting voters' outrage about the state of Canadian democracy in the Harper era, there has been no rising up by the electorate to embrace Ignatieff's cause. And so the Liberal leader is, indeed, in a "funny place" in this election campaign: in a dead heat with Jack Layton's NDP in the race for second place, with the alleged autocrat in the blue bib many strides ahead and closing in on the finish line.

And what about the fight for more open, honest governance and a less controlling, less despotic prime minister?

Canadians, it seems, really have "kind of shrugged" and said: "Who cares? So what?"

Liberal senator and campaign co-chairman David Smith acknowledges that the party's defence-of-democracy message has not resonated with voters.

"A lot of the average guys on the sidewalk, this is not something that they really understand," he told Postmedia News. "But, are we going to give up? No, because it is important."

But for Canadians, according to various public opinion surveys released throughout the campaign, the trust-in-government issue continues to register well down the list of their priorities in this election.

Little has changed on that front since the battle for votes began on March 26.

A Postmedia-commissioned survey in the first week of the campaign put health care, the economy, taxes and jobs all ahead of the trust factor in the election-issue pecking order.

And in the same poll, Harper was identified by about half of all respondents as the leader best suited to be prime minister, with Layton preferred by one in three Canadians and Ignatieff well back as the choice of fewer than one in five voters.

Hidden agenda? More respondents said this label applied to Ignatieff than to Harper. And which leader is most trustworthy? Harper was ahead of Ignatieff by three to one at the outset of the campaign, and the gap has only widened since.

Ignatieff — gamely, and in defiance of such poll results — insisted in a one-on-one interview last Tuesday with the CBC's Peter Mansbridge that the voters he's met along the campaign trail are responding well to his message.

"What I've noticed in all of these meetings are the number of progressive Canadians from all parties, saying: 'We've got to get rid of Stephen Harper. We can't trust him on the democracy issue,' " Ignatieff said. "What I'm trying (to do) is join the dots up here so people see a pattern that I think is bad for the country."

In a sign, perhaps, of how little progress the former professor has really made in his educative effort, Ignatieff's latest explanation of his campaign strategy closely echoes what he was saying about the goal of his campaign before the election even began.

As he stood in the House of Commons on March 25, moments after introducing the non-confidence motion that brought down the Harper government over its "contempt for Parliament," Ignatieff summed up his case for turfing the Tories.

"We are here today because of a long pattern of abuse, not simply the withholding of documents on this particular occasion," he said at the time.

"There is a longer pattern of abuse that goes back to the shutting down of Parliament on two occasions. When the government of Canada was under pressure, facing just criticism from members of this House, it chose to prorogue. Canadians did not like that. It set the pattern of contempt, the pattern of disrespect, the pattern of abuse of our democracy that brings us to this place."

Ignatieff's connect-the-dots campaign was designed to put the words contempt, democracy and trust at the top of voters' minds before they reach the ballot box on May 2.

But those words appear to have been crowded out by other terms — economy, coalition, taxes — that have been repeated relentlessly and effectively by Ignatieff's prime target.

It's the first time I bought the domain and rent premium hosting, hopefully the next time my online business will grow rapidly because I will try to pursue the online world with gusto. The domain name is heryantony.com, my domain and hosting contract from IDwebhost. I bought the domain on December 4, 2008 and that same day my new blog has been online.

After going through the process of booking and payment, then within a few minutes of my account has finally been enabled. I then started to install WordPress from Fantastico menu in the cPanel Hosting, then in some times finally my first blog with own domain and hosting already online.
